Unmasking Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.

AI-generated images purporting to show Venezuela's president detained following his apprehension by the US have amassed countless of views on social media.

How AI Images of the President Appeared Soon After

Initial fake AI image seemingly showing him led off a plane surfaced within hours. The picture was unpublished by any official American sources; rather, it was posted on X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was produced or modified with generative AI.

Additional AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the following hours, purporting to present different views of Maduro in custody. Discernible watermarks on these images show they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

The detection tool confirms the further pictures were likewise generated or edited AI technology.

Real Photo Posted but Fakes Persisted

Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was published, AI-generated pictures persisted online but were altered to incorporate the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Digital forensics show these altered fabrications were initially shared on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Once again, SynthID confirms these subsequent pictures were created or altered Google AI.

Key Points:

  • Deepfakes gained traction following the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The initial fabricated image was shared very quickly on social media.
  • Tools like Google’s SynthID were used to verify the pictures as AI-generated.
  • Fake images continued to spread and evolve even after the release of real photographs.
  • The origin of several fakes was traced to social media accounts focused on graphic design.
