Larry Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would step back from public roles after House committee made public his frequent communications with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.

The economist stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await tracking their development".

Summers, who previously led the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Message Exchange

The recently released communications demonstrated that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the technology organization said it accepted his decision to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the company commented.

Congressional Action

This development comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on recently to pass a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will subsequently move to the office of President Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the legislation, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his base.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-connected messages released by the Congressional committee recently included several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The emails revealed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to introduce the official to notable world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the messages were made available with the general audience, Summers said he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to persist in interacting with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild trust and mend bonds with the people most important to me".

Professional History

The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and is still a academic there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following his announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in the capital where he was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was not affiliated with the group.

He joined the leadership of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive the company leader.
