A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.

The winning bid for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants domestically and internationally.

"The first tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a regular figure at the yearly new year's auction.

Known as the King of Tuna, this businessman is renowned for submitting record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared in no time."

This latest acquisition exceeds his own historic purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to shatter his own record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants nationwide.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a positive way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one satisfied diner.
