A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
At least 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.
Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.
Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "shocked" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Residents have described the hillside area - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Gang Growth
The Red Command group have been expanding their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Security forces stated more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.
